West African countries’ surcharge on chocolate prices shows difficulties farmers face in making money

Poverty and poor income is a common factor in causing farmers to rely upon child labour in cocoa-growing communities in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana. The National discusses how income and sustainability efforts can impact farmers’ livelihoods, featuring input from ICI’s research on farmer income and ICI’s Executive Director Nick Weatherill who discusses why it is imperative that the cocoa sector scales up sustainability efforts.
