This paper is based on a study conducted in 2002 that surveyed a representative sample of more than 11,000 members of cocoa households. It examines the determinants of child labour participation in the cocoa farming sector in four regions of Côte d'Ivoire. The study revealed that child labour in cocoa farming and non-enrolment in schools are significant. Important determinants that explain child work/schooling outcomes include gender and age of children; education level of parents; the household dependency ratio; farm size; cocoa productivity levels; and the number of sharecroppers working with the household head.
