The General Agricultural Workers Union of Ghana (GAWU), a partner of the International Cocoa Initiative, has recently been awarded a Labor Rights Defenders Award by the International Labor Rights Forum. The award recognises GAWU’s commitment and effort in acting against child labour and for being a strong advocate for farmers’ rights in Ghana’s cocoa sector.

“It is possible to produce cocoa without child labor, it is possible to do agriculture without child labor, and this is possible when farmers can organize,” said Andrews Tagoe, Deputy General Secretary of GAWU, upon accepting the award.

The International Labor Rights Forum hosts its awards ceremony each year, when organisations and individuals are honoured for their work defending workers’ rights. ICI extends its congratulations to GAWU for the recognition of its ongoing work to protect children and cocoa farmers.
