Child labour and the risk of forced labour are both present in the cocoa supply chain.
These issues often have their roots in poverty. A lack of infrastructure and essential services, especially limited access to quality education in cocoa-growing communities and limited knowledge or application of existing laws are all factors behind both child and forced labour. Here, we present key information and definitions related to these issues.
An estimated 1.56 million children are in child labour in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana in cocoa today. Forced labour is far less prevalent in the cocoa supply chain, though its impacts can be more serious.
