This research, led by UNICEF, examines the impact of the United Republic of Tanzania’s Productive Social Safety Net. The programme provides cash transfers, conditional to be used on health and education services, to extremely poor households.
Its findings showed that these transfers changed child work from outside of the household for pay to work within the household. It also found a perception among participant families that child work in the household was both more useful for families and safer for children. The programme improved educational outcomes for children in assisted households. In households that received cash only school dropout rates did not change, in those that received the conditional transfers the dropout rate decreased.
