This article recounts the history of the international cocoa industry moving toward the acknowledgement of serious labour issues in the global cocoa supply chain, and then a public commitment to act to address the problems. This short historical account explains how the International Cocoa Initiative came to be a key player in the international cocoa sector and shares some lessons learned regarding the elimination of child labour in the cocoa industry.
