In parallel with its analysis of child labour in cocoa-growing areas in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, NORC at the University of Chicago conducted a study, funded by the World Cocoa Foundation, that examined the effectiveness of industry interventions in reducing the prevalence of hazardous child labour. The study highlights that hazardous child labour has been reduced by one third in communities where child protection programmes have been underway for three years or more. The report also underlines, however, that the coverage of cocoa-growing communities by these interventions remains small, emphasising the need for scale up.
