Kailash Satyarthi, Chairperson of the Global March Against Child Labour and a founding Board Member of ICI since 2002, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014, jointly with Malala Yousafrai, the 12 year old Pakistani girl’s education activist. The two winners were selected from 278 nominees for “for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”
Kailash has dedicated his life to the fight against child labour in his native India and worldwide. His work has contributed to the development of major international conventions on children’s rights, and has supported ICI, from its inception, in its efforts to tackle child labour in the cocoa sector.
“We are extremely excited that Kailash has deservedly won this most prestigious recognition for his tireless dedication to childrens’ rights. ICI has benefitted from his guidance over the last 12 years, and we are proud and inspired to have had him as a Board Member all these years,” said ICI’s Executive Director, Nick Weatherill.
