Mondelēz International, a board member of the International Cocoa Initiative, has released its 2020 Human Rights Due Diligence and Modern Slavery report, covering ongoing action to address and prevent child labour and forced labour in its cocoa supply chain. The report includes updates on the roll out of Mondelēz’s Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) and ongoing collaborations with the Jacobs Foundation on quality education and ICI on forced labour risk.
Key updates included in the report:
- 68% of cocoa volume now sourced through the company’s Cocoa Life programme.
- Mondelēz plans to cover all of its 1,804 sourcing communities through CLMRS. The report states that as of the end of 2020, CLMRS covered 513 communities in West Africa.
- Ongoing support of CLEF and ELAN initiatives, led by the Jacob’s Foundation, focused on the provision of quality education and early childhood development for 5 million children.
- The report also notes that Mondelēz has taken action to raise awareness of forced labour through learning modules and a toolkit on Forced Labour Risk Mitigation which have been rolled out among its employees.
- Mondelēz continues to support an ongoing ICI forced labour pilot which is developing a series of tools to assess forced labour risk and direct measures to address and prevent these risks and identified cases in the cocoa supply chain.
