Starbucks has joined the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) to advance its efforts to address and prevent child labour and improve community resilience in its cocoa supply chain.
Starbucks is joining ICI because it aligns with its vision of thriving cocoa-growing communities and is dedicated to sourcing cocoa responsibly for the betterment of people and planet, the company explained. It is working across the industry to evolve and strengthen its approach to responsibly sourced cocoa.
Joining ICI represents an opportunity to further support and contribute to ICI’s ultimate objective of ensuring 100% coverage of the cocoa supply chain with effective and sustainable systems to prevent and address child labour in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.
Welcoming Starbucks as ICI’s newest member, Executive Director, Matthias Lange said, “we are pleased to welcome Starbucks to the organisation. Their experience with other commodities, such as coffee, brings a different perspective and enables us to learn from and share experiences with other sectors. We look forward to working with them.”
